Orchad Field trip

Beberapa hari yang lalu, saya dan teman2 sekampus mengunjungi sebuah Orchad dan Nursery in Ferrara, dan ini dia laporannya...

ORCHAD AND NURSERY MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION

The purposes of this field trip were :
1. Learn about the Orchard and Nursery Management
2. To know about the tipes of rootstock in graft methods
3. To know how to purposes to graft the plant

LOCATION

I. The Nursery in Vivai Maggiro
In this nursery, they grew up the trees in the 3,5 x 1,2 m2 with the density 5.000 plants. The nursery was built far away from other nursery to avoid the diseases that one of caused by the Fire Black. They grafted the trees by using Buttira Hardy (BA 29) as the rootstock and Max Red Bartlet as the cultivar. Beside that, they also grafted the new variety that called Carmen with quince as the rootstock. Chip budding is the type of grafting that they usually done for the plant here. In this method, they use a dormant side bud then grafted on the stem of another stock plant, and when it has fused successfully, it is encouraged to grow by cutting out the stem above the new bud. But, if the plant incompatibility with the variety, they will use the same variety as the rootstock as an intertem.

II. Consorvo Italiano Vivaisti
The C.I.V is a company that made by three Italian nurseries, ViVAI MaZZONI, SALVI VIVAI and TAGLIANI VIVAI. They produce about 4 Millions rootstocks, 3 millions scion trees of Apple, pear and stone fruits, 120 millions strawberries and 2 millions asparagus crown. They have two main activities are breeding and research (high quality and diseases resistance), and multiplication. They are strong in strawberries, they produce alomst hundred thousand seeds.
In growing the strawberries, they do by three steps before it planted on the orchads. At the first step, they make seedling of strawberries on the sandy soil and cover it by the plastick to avoid the dryness of the sand and also to keep clean the plant from the soil, this is call CP1. After one year, the select the best quality of plant as a mother plant, then it will be planting under the net to avoid the insect attack in one box. One box for each mother plant, because from one mother plant will grow hundreds plants, this is call CP2. CP1 was a mother plant to produce CP2. One year later, CP2 will be selected for the third times, they will choose the best quality and move it to other place. After that the plant will be planted on the Orchads. The strawberry can not plant in the same place in one year.

III. Then, we also visited the Orchads for produce the mother plant, they grew the mother plant, they use M9 as the Apple roostock. Then we visited the peer orchad with bivatel variety, they put the net on the orchad to avoid from the insect and the snow. The last place was an apple orchads, with the highest production and hundreds workers.
